History of Galewela Divisional Secretariat
Introduction
Galewela Divisional Secretariat was established in 1992 as a result of the state process of decentralization of administration. This office makes great efforts to provide expeditious services to meet the various needs of the people of the area. Contributes to the activities of the Line Ministry under Public Administration Circular 21/92 with the powers of the Government Agents No. 58 of 1992 and the responsibilities of performing the functions of the Central Provincial Council.
History of Local Government
This local government unit was initially governed by the central government under the name of Gam Sabha. It provided services to the people to suit the needs of the times. Subsequently, in 1981, except for the Municipal Councils, the Village Councils and Minor Urban Councils were taken over by the District Development Councils. Until 31.12.1987 the village councils were governed under the district development councils. Accordingly, Galewela Minor Urban Council, Kuda Wewa, Kanda Palla Koralela Village Council and Wahakotte Udugoda Pallesiya Pattu Grama Sabha were amalgamated and Galewela Pradeshiya Sabha was established on 01.01.1988 in accordance with Act No. 15 of 1987 representing 59 Grama Niladhari Divisions.
Natural Location
Galewela Divisional Secretariat is located in the northwestern corner of the Matale District in the Central Province. Its size is 192.4 square kilometers and its four directional boundaries are as follows.
North - Palagala Divisional Secretariat in Anuradhapura District
East - Dambulla Divisional Secretariat
South - Pallepola and Naula Divisional Secretariats
Ibbagamuwa Polpithigama Divisional Secretariat is also bordered by the West - Kurunegala District.
This area consists of 157 villages and 59 Grama Niladhari Divisions. It has 03 Farmers' Centers, 01 Local Government Institutions and 01 Police Station for general administration.
